Some non-citizen in removal proceedings may seek to request voluntary departure in lieu of a removal order. This form of limited relief requires that the non-citizen return to his or her home country at the his or her own expense. If the non-citizen does not depart the U.S. pursuant to the order, the consequences are severe as the non-citizen would be subject to civil penalties and is ineligible for any relief in the U.S. for a period of ten years.
